Opack has participated in many exhibitions this year where we met many customers looking for customized packaging for their products for the first time. Many of them are confused about the packaging style, materials, inks, and some other important links of the entire packaging customization process. One of the most troublesome things for them is not knowing how to measuring or determine the size of the packaging box. So we want to share how to measure and determine the size of the packaging box in this blog post, hoping to help our online customers.
Before we carry out a series of measurements, let’s first make these questions clear:
What does the L × W × H of the custom box mean? How to Read Box Dimensions?
All box dimensions are written as length x width x height. For example, 16″ x 9″ x 5″ means 16″ (L) x 9″ (W) x 5″ (H)”.
Note:
Specify whether these are inner or outer box dimensions.
Some manufacturers may use A × B × C to represent L × W × H.
These questions seem simple, but many customers are confused about them. So, for easy reference and communication, we’ve created these dimension guidelines for some hot sale packaging styles.
How to Measure the Packaging Box Dimension?
Some customers may have a box of the desired size by hand but do not know how to measure it. If you have a box of desired sizes, follow the steps below to measure it.
Step1: Get Measuring Tools
A ruler or measuring tape is a common tool for measuring box size. Make sure these tools have clear markings so that the measurements can be recorded accurately.
Step2: Measure the Length
The length is the longest side of the box (excluding the vertical dimention). Place your measuring tool across the box, stretching from far-left edge to the far-right edge of the box. Ensure the tool is perpendicular to the edges, not tilted, to avoid errors in the measurement.
Step3: Measure the Width
Next, measure the box’s width, which is the side next to the length. Position the measuring tool straight across from one edge to the opposite edge. This measurement represents the width, usually the shorter side. Ensure the tool is level for precision.
Step4: Measure the Height (Depth)
Then, you’ll measure the height, that is, the vertical deepth of a box, going from the bottom to the top. Position the measuring tool so that it forms a 90-degree angle with the bottom of the box to avoid any angle that could lead to a wrong measurement.
How to Determine Your Custom Printed Box Size
If you don’t have a box of the desired size, the following steps are for you to determine your custom-printed packaging box size.
Step1: Measure the Size of the Product
First, we have to accurately measure the length, width and height of the product. This is the basis for determining the minimum space required for the custom packaging box.
Step2: Add Safety Margin
Based on the product size, Opack usually recommends our customers add about 10% safety margin to avoid collision or vibration between the product and the packaging box (Sometimes some of our customers tell us they will put some cushioning materials inside the box. In that case, we’d better add more room for that. Feel free to contact Opack, if you are confused about the safety margin.)
Step3: Choose Packaging Box Types
Choose the right box type according to the shape of your product, such as rectangular box, square box, tube box, etc. (For complex shape packaging box design, customization or measurement, feel free to contact us!)
Step4: Consider Packaging Materials and Techniques:
When calculating the size of the packaging box, we also need to consider the thickness of the packaging material and the surface treatment techniques to ensure that it will not be damaged during manufacturing and transportation.
